Early 20th Century Oil Portrait of Grand National 1912 Winner

Sold

An early 20th century portrait of Grand National winner signed and dated “Jerry M”, 1912.

Bottom left corner signed “A.St John James 1912”. The rear of the canvas stamped “Windsor & Newton’s”.

“Jerry M was the outstanding jumper of his era, despite suffering from wind, back and leg troubles. He would not have won a prize in a showring, with his ewe neck and long sway back. However he was exactly what was required for a Liverpool steeplechaser, with great heart room and a brain in his plain big head. This grand horse won 14 of his 20 races including the 1912 Grand National and the Grand Steeplechase de Paris in 1910, the year in which he was also runner-up at Liverpool.  After the 1912 National Jerry M never ran again, and he had to be put down in 1914.”  – The National Horseracing Museum
